The Building, the Food, the School Blue Elephant Phuket

Blue Elephant The Building

“Blue Elephant is a total sensory concept”

Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant is located at the site of the well-known Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion. The old mansion was built in 1903, in the reign of King Rama V. In the past, it was used as the governor’s residence. The stunning building is a combination of European and Chinese style architecture (Sino-Portuguese), while it is decorated in traditional Chinese style. A well is situated in the middle of the mansion, along with a large ventilator above it on the rooftop called a “Shim Jae”, which is a part of feng-shui science. Above the door, is a wooden sign with Chinese letters that reads ‘Lean Bee’ meaning ‘Lotus’. This is in commemoration of the hardship & struggle of ancestors. The house faces south, enabling air to flow through and this reflects the wisdom & expertise of the architect.

In recent years Phra Pitak Chinpracha was taken on by the Blue Elephant restaurant chain. The crumbling 100-year-old, 20-room mansion had been empty for decades. The international Thai restaurant chain, established in London in 1986, allocated $2m to renovate the mansion.

Today, walking into the Blue Elephant restaurant will dazzle your senses. Blue Elephant is a total sensory concept based on the very best of traditional Thai beauty, charm, and courtesy.

The Blue Elephant Cooking School invites you to the dazzling century old mansion, where you will discover and experience the culinary wonders of Royal Thai Cuisine. The Blue Elephant Cooking School has fully equipped facilities offering you the chance to put your hand to practicing Thai Cuisine.

The course begins, with a trip to a local fresh market. Every stall will be busy with buyers examining produce and haggling over prices.  You’ll position yourselves around the many stalls to hear the instructor’s discourse on the various herbs, vegetables and pastes available to you.

Back at the school, you’ll begin your lesson.  You’ll be handed out copies of your recipes as the chef begins demonstrating in the bright, airy exhibition kitchen.

Then it’s time to file into the well-stocked kitchen to try your hand at each dish.  Your experience of working in the pleasant kitchen will be enhanced all the more by the knowledge that you will not be called upon to wash a single dish.
At the end of the class, you will be invited to eat your creations in the restaurant’s dining room, and finally you’ll fill your arms with a certificate of completion and a bag of Blue Elephant-branded spices and seasonings.
