On Monday 25th April 2011 members of the phuketindex.com team were given a great opportunity, to visit the Mandara Spa at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. This spectacular spa is designed in a contemporary Thai style and set within the grounds of the JW Marriott Mai Khao Beach. We were there to enjoy spa treatments, which we were told were guaranteed to soothe the body and the spirit. The treatments which we were to receive were recommended for us by Spa Manager Ms. Areewan Tapsorn (Tour).
The name Mandara refers to an ancient Sanskrit myth: the quest to discover the precious elixir of immortality and eternal youth. Mandara Spa is considered a sanctuary of nature, where the essential elements of life are cherished.
Treatments include a variety of massage styles, herbal wraps and facials, salt scrubs, seaweed wraps, aromatherapy, reflexology and a selection of luxurious fresh water baths. Treatments are available for individual guests or couples, and feature high quality imported products, as well as natural products grown in Thailand.
The spa facilities include a full service beauty salon, separate steam rooms for male and female guests, five double luxurious spa suites and eleven double deluxe rooms. The spa suites feature en-suite terrazzo plunge pools, private showers and spacious vanity and bale areas. Each suite opens into an outdoor rock and water garden, a Thai sala and herbal steam room. The double deluxe rooms offer comfortable Thai interiors with private showers and changing rooms. Exotic products, reflective of the destination, have been extensively used in the interiors. Spa treatments can also be enjoyed outdoors under the shade of a poolside Thai sala or around the pool deck.
Tour was very proud when offering us our special treatment, which was called “Elemis Face and Body Sensation” and the treatment was to last a memorable 75 Minutes. The treatment gently detoxifies, increases blood and lymphatic circulation, encourages a deep level of relaxation and is excellent for tension and severe muscle spasm and tension headaches. To complete the treatment and to achieve all over deep relaxation hot stones are used and the heat from the stones penetrates the body giving the maximum relief possible. The treatment was performed for me by Senior Therapist, Ms. Janjuri Nuwanna (Jim).
The first steps are changing into a bathrobe; you are then required to hit a gong to summon any elementals. You then clean the feet and brush with cactus to push away blood to balance the body. This process is then done on the two sides of the body, arms and finishes at the back.
You then lay down on the massage table and droplets of D-Stress Oil are placed on the parts of body to be massaged. Then using 2 Hot Stones, which have been boiled in hot water, you are massaged up and down the arms, legs, shoulders and back. This process is repeated 3 times. The heat from the hot stones helps muscles relax and also help provide good sleep.
Once the massage is complete, a full 30 minute facial massage is given. Once all the treatments are complete the body feels totally relaxed and you feel no stress or pain and after 45 minutes muscle aches subside. To receive the full benefits of the treatments, it is recommended they should be carried out every 2 or 3 weeks.
